Long post overall, but I also wanted to add a bit of Sheezy only content. I had thought about using the persona feature to start one for either original characters I used to use and thought about reviving, venting art, or just have one for each. Problem is I'm still using mobile to access the site and it already feels overwhelming... As much as I like to have that way of organization, I figured it's best to wait it out and see what the revival of the site would bring since I've overheard options for folders. That option is somewhat up on the table for the moment, but otherwise - here's the actual content.
After the rather wild mess that was the inauguration, I think it was about time I put my foot down on me not being nose deep into socials. Between Facebook (which is logged out) and Tumblr being heavy on the play by play, I lost a good portion of my temper. Tumblr has been awfully quiet for the most part. FB on the other hand, I've decided to just log out as mentioned. I probably have a lot more on my blocked list than my friends list by this rate.
I had lost interest in side7 and any future socials because I have had rough mental health issues on my end. Pillowfort hasn't been as enjoyable and sometimes, my paranoia shakes hands with my anxiety before ganging up on me.
I have been trying to get more journal time in to help alleviate that negative emotion but I also turn to more gaming... Needing to get that Nintendo DS Lite case swap done but that requires a tool I don't have because screws have been stripped down.
At this time, I'm still using DreamWidth but just for personal journaling. I had contemplated on moving my gaming reviews over elsewhere. Whether or not the reviews proper get moved to site or edited into my Backloggd account, demos are going to be moved over there. I'm not quite set on if they should be in the journal or as a "review". Mainly because it's only a small fraction of the game I'm critiquing.
Recently stumbled on Domotown which is another art site similar to Artfol. Despite the rather cozy feeling, I can't bring myself to join because I've been worn out of socials for a good while. Another one is more for the inner gamer: GamerSocials. Very similar to discord with the added features of Backloggd. I don't usually share my friend codes on gaming stuff as often because - I don't consider myself a gamer by any means and my selection of games is rather eccentric.
Like I said, I've been burned out of socials for a long while. I rather draw anyways but I still tend to game much more often. And the occasional House MD clips - which slowly evolve into a Hugh Laurie obsession... Ugh, me and those British men... Better that than the political idols.
If I do become less active here, that's probably why. I thought about saying I'm going on hiatus for a bit but then I end up breaking curfew. So, I figured if I just say it like this and not discreetly say I'm on break it's easier. I do plan on using other socials like Backloggd, Discogs, Goodreads/Storygraph, and maybe Letterboxd. Hopefully just a bit of detox from socials would help with not being too stressed out.
With that, I leave with the words of:
"Keep yourself safe, don't take in a lot of news, stay active in advocating for human rights, and don't pay mind to the smokescreen in your face."
A lot of folks can tell I've only been here for a couple of months so I'm less than aware of what the revival would bring.
1. What exactly would happen in terms of progress and works posted here?
Back when I used Artfol, that site had also brought up time and time again that a second version was in the works and that current users and their content would be brought into that iteration of the site. Would that be the same for something like what Sheezy is planning to do later this year?
As someone that is terrible at remembering what she's already posted here and what's left to share, I still wonder this a bit. Having to refresh and build back up the settings and content from the previous iteration is never fun to anyone. And as someone that's already on the last bit of rope when it comes to social media as a whole, this could really snap it...
2. Is the training card feature teased similar to ATCs (artist trading cards) or NFTs?
It might sound like a rhetorical question, but it's more because I'm an anxious and paranoid person...
Reading the recent development log, I saw that this feature was on the list for the upcoming revival. On paper, that sounds cool even if I had no intention of opting in. But then my mind being ever so lovely (/s), thought about it being similar to NFTs. Now I know the difference between the two in that both cards of the same variant between two users would've been different in terms of - I think ID or some set of numbers. I might not be the best person to explain the NFT stuff...
Regardless, I think this is more of a curiosity question than judgemental. It was very late at night and my train of thought gets detailed into panic easily.
The several questions were actually just two but just wanted to get that out there...
Copied from @mooncritter. I swear these are just addicting even if I tend to overshare a bit... I had this in a draft but never really got around to finishing it until hours later. I say that because I was trying to clear out unused tabs out of my web browser.
I. How many usernames have you had? (You don't have to share them!)
Too many to list... Disregarding the Neopets usernames, I'd say about 6 or 7 at most. Been doing better about keeping them to a fairly limited amount of two... Three since I can't change the one on Flight Rising despite not playing as often.
II. What does your current username mean?
Ookami being Japanese for wolf because I've been trying to learn "legit" Japanese. J being first letter of first name (even though I end up giving the real one up). Tacked on the 64 since I always had the Nintendo 64 on my mind. Not my childhood console by any means, but one that I always wanted to have for myself.
III. What is the first program you used to make digital art?
Microsoft Paint like a child of the 90s. Still don't have the files of the creations on hand since they got lost from one PC jump to another.
IV. Where did you first start posting your art?
In general, blooming Facebook... I already feel the regret in admitting that.
In terms of actual art oriented sites, DeviantArt pre-AI and still very heavy on the drama llamas.
V. What is the first piece of media you drew fanart for?
Almost said Pokemon, but I know that's not right. I actually done some for Sonic the Hedgehog first.
VI. Who was your first self-insert/persona/fursona? What did they mean to you?
Self named Sonic OC insert. My guess is that they were supposed to represent the idea of myself. It's been years since that one was created. First fursona was one I had shared on a previous place and I'm not sure if I had done so here as well. That one represented the odd qualities I had since they were a cat rabbit thing...
VII. Who is your current self-insert/persona/fursona? How are they different to your first?
Current one is another self named character, expect gender bent because I really could do that. Had him for about 10 years now. My guess is that this time around I was a bit better with developing the character and giving him a unique personality as much as possible. He also tends to be easier to draw and color.
VIII. What/who inspired you to be an artist?
Extreme amounts of exposure to games and animation. I didn't have any close friends when growing up that drew until middle school. Most of that was on me and I did end up learning from drawing books on how to improve. I still tend to be very indecisive and conscious about my skills...
IX. What tools are integral to your current workflow? (e.g. Programs, brushes, references.)
Mostly references, regardless of whether it's digital or traditional. Ink pens have always been a integral tool for my traditional works. Colored pencils are so common considering I'm not too picky on branding of the pencils. Used to be very much a Crayola brand scamp but have slowly went into CrazyArt brand despite the word of caution about their quality.
Digital has been always made in Krita. Pixel art is still in that experimental phase and I haven't had enough programs used to really decide.
Doing this just purely for fun. There's not much of a definitive person that created this to credit properly, so if someone finds that information and is more than happy to share please do. I rather give them the credit as necessary.
I might of misunderstood a couple of these questions but still answered them to the best of my ability - and memory.
RULES:
Answer each question accurately and honestly. Skip anything you don't know.
Art programs you have but don't use?
At the moment, dotpic and Autodesk Sketchbook on my phone. For the PC, I know I didn't use Krita a whole lot but I don't use the drawing tablet a lot either.
Is it easier to draw someone facing left, right, or forward?
Slight Pass; can't really answer because I haven't drawn a lot of actual people... Most of the time, it's from memory of the character and it varies. And I probably didn't understand the question.
What ideas come from when you were little?
RPG games, both fantasy and creature based. I had recalled doing a lot of fakemon creations and stuff.
Favorite character or subject that's a bitch to draw?
Hand gestures are a pain... Simplified or not, hands are just awful to draw and I tend to overanalyze just how awful they look.
Estimate of how much of your art you post online VS. the art you keep for yourself?
Don't usually post everything unless I consider it really good beyond sharing with IRL circle. Medium doesn't matter since I treat them both the same. Site graphics are a completely different beast and I end up sharing them since they'll be used for online use by me anyways.
Anything that might inspire you subconsciously? (e.g. This horse wasn't meant to look like The Last Unicorn but I see it.)
My biggest guess would be Pokemon Sprites from the older generation games. Some of them showed just how limited the hardware was, but also the small details that tend to be inaccurate compared to their official artwork.
A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate?
Acrylic painting, I do get into it myself but rarely. It's easy to set up but a pain to clean up. I have seen some pretty nice looking paintings by other artists that are able to utilize different techniques to get different effects and textures.
What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in?
Way too many comic ideas: humanoid teens with slice of life elements, the typical fantasy comic, Harry Potter inspired with Japanese influence, and so on... So many decent ideas but not exactly good at finishing them to the end.
Favorite piece of clothing to draw?
Pants/jeans tend to be the fun part for me in terms of clothing. Shirts tend to be second.
Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what?
Various YouTube videos: tech videos, TV show clips, and rarely music. Sometimes I do have some form of TV but it's through streaming services or DVDs.
Easiest part of body to draw?
Sometimes hair if that counts, ears or head if it doesn't.
A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing?
I guess the artist that did the character artwork for the Xenoblade series, even though I haven't really played the games that much?
Any favorite motifs?
I guess my favorite would be a lot of fantasy/slice of life stuff? I hardly pay much attention to details like that. Plus I also do a lot of kemonomimi characters.
Where do you draw? (Don't drop your IP address, this just means do you doodle at a park or something?)
Anywhere that I have my sketchbook on hand and it's comfortable.
Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing?
-Skip-
Do you eat/drink when drawing? If so, what?
Mostly drink, very rarely eat but usually small snack.
Favorite inanimate objects to draw? (e.g. Food, nature)
Anything along the lines of flowers like roses and mostly cherry blossoms as well as some food dishes.
Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy?
Unsure on how to answer that, so pass
Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways?
Anything done by Akira Himekawa. Really loved their style despite not being near the amount of professionally done than that.
What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any?
I don't do any but might start implementing them.
Do you use different layer modes?
Not really. Other than locking it when finished and making sure it's on a separate layer.
Do your references include stock images?
If they do, it's very minute. I tend to forget where I get images from that get used to refer back to for drawing... π
Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
Pass since I've not had that come up...
What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended?
Not posted publicly but there was one I made with persona's parents that might of been interpreted in a different way than I wanted to be. Harder to explain than it is to just show it...
Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with?
Rarely, I just jump in and draw what I feel like drawing. Even if it feels difficult to start I just draw whatever comes to mind.
Any art events you have participated in the past?
Aside from Artfight, only other ones I consider mentioning is the small handful of ones that I did locally in my area. Most of which felt very discouraging because - I sometimes feel overlooked compared to other pieces. I'll leave it there because those folks might be watching and I'm not willing to open that can of worms up...
Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically?
I would guess something like Naruto or anything like House MD. In terms of character development, maybe. But nothing along the lines of art in general.
What piece of yours do you think is underrated?
I could say all of them tend to be but that's because I don't give myself enough credit. But I can also argue that one they do get enough traction I think the opposite.
After a bit of sleep adjustment and goodness knows what, I have been trying to get less stressed about it. I don't consider going full time "upload every single doodle and art piece done" regardless. I still don't like the idea of it and I fully intend to keep it as such. Journal entries feel like the only way to update the whole fuss I mess with other than just posting them on Pillowfort and if I feel like it - Tumblr.
Slowly had been passing off Side7 since I've been bad about using it. Plus I haven't had much of any incentive to continue using. The site isn't half bad, the slow bit of activity is nice - but maybe too nice? Felt very similar to DeviantArt pre-AI garbo. Otherwise though, I only check it once in a while before dropping it from radar. Same could be said with Newgrounds, but I also equate the sudden drop in activity when I did get scouted there. To me, it felt like pressure to not put out crap. I thought about a self depreciative joke, but that's just not right (nor true at this point). Mostly it's just don't put sketches on the portal that aren't sketches - at least I would think so.
I do still think about giving CharacterHub another try from time to time, but it feels like drinking toxic swamp water when I do. I personally left on my own terms. The site had some good features, but the reach relying on being able to support the site and/or compliment bombs feels pretty restrictive to those that might not have any reach for the first couple of months of usage unless they get aquatinted with folks there fast and they are willing to use one on a new user.
Like most of the recent art related places, there's still a bit of a bot problem and other than blocking them, they do keep coming and there's no way to remove the "fake likes" unless you delete the character/post and republish it. Toyhouse had a decent idea as well as here where you have a bit more control with likes and comments. Former being TH only. I miss the idea of aesthetic/mood boards from CH but I rather not go back to the site because of one feature...
From there, I considered limiting the socials from here on out. Older ones might be revisited, but I don't have high hopes of bringing it back unless there is better reach for those that might not have a strong following to begin with.
Artfol being one I still think about returning to but don't because I felt like that ship sank due to my own rash actions. Reach for me personally wasn't that good to begin with so I had little to lose in dropping that. Itaku was the same plus the tagging is rather intimidating and just way too time consuming...
Recent weather might be the driving point that is needed to do more housekeeping. I've been trying to get stuff out that doesn't give joy and is gathering dust. I say as I have piles upon piles of books to mess with...
Same could be said with the games and such. I did manage to get a set up for the DIY table for the future but still working on everything else. Drawing is still in the background, but a lot of my time is recently spent with Nintendo Switch Demos... I have been writing more about them on my DreamWidth but I still feel a little bit of consciousness - in a lot of ways. Mainly because I try to not make the journal there but solely be about gaming, but just a personal place to update on what's going on. The other part being that, I'm no AVGN in several ways - but I also feel like I sometimes come off as a bit harsh? Not that I've had people comment that to me.
Even without the use of a PC, I still have the itch to work on the website. I ended up doing blueprint plans for the overall layout as well as possible buttons. I might be thinking about posting the graphics I make to use there. Now that I thought about it: I'm not sure if that's going to be for my Neocities site or the Nekowebs site...
I could use the neocities one for personal and the Nekowebs for just me gushing on my art. I still haven't thought this long and hard...
Already have some ideas for shrines, one being for the book series I refuse to shut up about sometimes. I also thought about the usual stuff like two different evolution families from Pokemon I liked, the Lufia RPG series, and even my favorite two tailed fox boy. Do I still feel a bit anxious getting into the website thing again? Absolutely. I feel terrified with anything that is public and can be used against me regardless. Do I want to back out of this? Not really. I still find the joy in sharing what I enjoy and what gives me joy.
Kind of the last thing on my personal list is this: I thought about using something like eBay and/or Kofi. eBay to get rid of my unneeded things, and Kofi for tips. Throne is far off the table but not by any means taken off of consideration. Kofi just needs a set up of where to put the tips as well as just the amount for each tier, but I seriously don't consider myself out there yet to even get usage out of either. Mostly used them for the basic follow others or buying stuff for me. Keeping myself on that tightrope of over dumping is difficult at this point...
