J'ARRIVE - JACQUES BREL (1968
I will admit, I have become a bit of a sucker for songs from the 1960s with themes of romance and/or yearning. The majority of tracks I had previously listened to on that theme were from Italian artists such as Ornella Vanoni and Mina. I discovered Jaques Brel the same way I discovered my adoration for 60s Italian pop - by a cover from Mr. Bungle and Faith No More singer, Mike Patton. Mike Patton had covered a song of Jaques Brel,La Chanson de Jacky, for the band Secret Cheifs 3 (Click here to listen to the track). Curious after listening to the cover of the track, I sought out the original version (Click here to listen to the track) and check out more songs from the artist. Thus far, J'arrive has been the track that has stuck out to me the most.
QUESTION OF LIFE - FISHBONE (1988)
What a groove! I would listen to this track on repeat dancing around my kitchen cooking myself some lunch. The song reminds me a bit of Oingo Boingo's track Same Man I Was Before with it's energetic horns section and vague religious/spiritual themes. I got into Fishbone awhile back after a reviewer compared one of my favorite albums,Nagah Mahdi: Opuscrits en 48 rouleauxby Sebkah-Chott, to Fishbone's albumChim Chim's Badass Revenge. I soon after went and began my journey of listening to the band's entire discography, of which they have climbed their way to becoming one of my most listened-to bands. I was pleasantly surprised to find out another band I enjoy mentioned in the previous entry, Mr. Bungle, took inspiration from Fishbone!
NÃO VAI MUDAR - TONY BIZZARO (1977)
A disco hidden(From the perspective of a person living outside of Brazil) gem I would rank up there when the likes of other Brazilian artists of the time such as Trio Tenura and Toni Tornado. I like to imagine to myself a scenario of
CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER: TONI TORNADO || TONY BIZZARO.
With how much Toni Tornado is coughing in his trackTorniente, I think I'm going to have to go with Mr. Bizzaro.
DRACULA CHA CHA - THE TANGO SALOON (2012)
Hello Mike Patton... again... I can't seem to escape you. I may have listened to Question of Life on repeat as I was cooking lunches, but I would be singing to myself Dracula Cha Cha at 4:00 AM and while my bacon was creating so much smoke that it caused the fire alarm to go off (twice). I like to imagine this song to a scenario where Dracula decides to take a trip to Sicily and has an absolutely terrible time. Crucifixes, garlic, the blazing sun, WHY did he ever think taking a summer trip to Palermo was a good idea?
