School vs real love

We used to talk from dawn to night,
Now silence seems to hold us tight.
Your words are soft, your smile is thin,
Like something’s changed beneath your skin.

At school we walk on separate sides,
Like love’s a thing that gently hides.
We laugh with friends, we fake it well,
But underneath, we barely dwell.

You say we need to take it slow,
But I can feel the undertow.
Each day, you slip a bit away,
And I don’t know the words to say.

You once would fight to pull me close,
Now distance is what hurts the most.
You tell me that you’re doing fine,
But won’t let me beneath the line.

You used to see me when I cried,
Now I just wipe my tears and hide.
And though you say we’ll find our way,
It feels like you’ve begun to stray.

We’re holding on, but barely so,
To something we no longer know.
And though I’d stay until the end,
I’m scared I’ve lost my love, my friend.
