in my many years of being Online in Art spaces i have noticed one particular aversion....... and it's that people HATE to tackle the idea of drawing mecha and robots in general. which is kind of sad... bc mecha is actually way easier than people make it out to be... it's just slightly more advanced construction than minecraft block people. you have to think about mecha in simpler 3d shapes and go from there!
i think that my Big Aversion that's been similar to this has been drawing real life people... i don't think it's that i'm afraid of drawing realism but that i'm afraid that i'll get it wrong in some way. considering i have pretty bad face blindness this makes it way harder to get over my fear, lol. i guess the only way to tackle that is to actually spend some time working on it!
the questions for this journal:
are there subjects that other people struggle with that you find easy to draw? how about subjects that you personally find difficult?
i like using pen and paper the most, despite so much of my stuff being digital. having a physical sketchbook works! it gives you a physical reminder that what you're making isn't just floating out into the aether to be forgotten... and also gives you a visual reminder every time you flip through it of what you've been doing.
plus, the portability of a sketchbook means i don't have to lug around expensive electronics if i want to draw... i have a travelers notebook which is super useful for everyday use lol
i also like ink pens because it encourages me to stop erasing and redoing stuff. i actually have to think about what im drawing and not let muscle memory win
do you have any tools or mediums you like using? what's one that's helped you improve or change the way you approach art?
i've been making an effort to utilize a lot of construction techniques (example here) in my practice and warmup sketches, which has been a unique challenge since i have a bit of a hard time visualizing depth! i feel like it's given me an opportunity to think more about what i want to draw and how things will look before i put pen to paper, instead of mindlessly forming the same 3 poses and patterns over and over again.
what's a technique you've found helpful? are there any challenges you faced when using them?
like thoughts and notes n stuff. my main will still have major life update shares and etc but this will be me talking about art and my attempts to improve. expect me to post questions abt art here a lot like "what r ur inspirations and how do they influence ur art" and "whats your favorite medium or tool and why". bc i love those types of questions and i think everyone should get a chance to discuss stuff like that. and i love discussion. it opens up new possibilities when u talk techniques w ppl lol
