Hi. How are ya?
I posted this on Side7 a couple of hours ago and thought I'd add it here as well. It explains a bit about what my project Tales of Dianthus is about and what I plan to do with it. I also posted this explanation on my Toyhou.se account a long time ago, but I thought I'd rewrite it.
What is Tales of Dianthus: The Home of Magic?
This is my passion project that I have been working on since quarantine and one that I hold so dear to my heart because it is the only thing that kept me going during the hardest times of my life when my parents were hospitalized and I had to take care of my siblings at 18.
I'm still working on the world building and magic system. So that being said, things may change in the future. So take everything with a grain of salt while I try to piece it all together.
What is it about?
Current Explanation: Tales of Dianthus follows the lives of four best friends known as the Crimson Misfits, who live in a magical world where magic flows through the hearts of many, and who are given the title of Mage. The Misfits use their unique abilities to explore countless possibilities, even if the residents of Crimson, Primrose; the third largest city of the Dia Nation of Valentia, find their antics annoying.
However, think of this as more of a prequel, as at this point I intend to write short stories and try to create comics that explore the daily lives of the Misfits and other characters before the main story.
The main plot is more complex than I initially thought, so I need to work out the details before sharing. To say it simple, it has more of a superhero element with the main characters becoming chosen heroes. I will share more once I feel comfortable.
Who are the Crimson Misfits?
Their names are:
The socially awkward and introverted genius Luka Jason.
The easygoing and popular Kaidan Huang.
The optimistic and cheerful spirit Naomi Monet.
The energetic and athletic Julian Campbell.
Four kids, each unique in their own way, found each other one fateful summer and became best friends, their bond only growing stronger with each passing year. They unintentionally turned their town into a playground, leaving a trail of trouble caused by their magic – which often causes their parents to have high blood pressure.
As fate would have it, their parents, especially their fathers, knew each other many years ago, serving together in the military and working side by side on missions. Eventually, they went their separate ways, but they were reunited years later when their children met. Over the years, the families became very close; Christina and Aaron became romantically involved, and other family members consider each other family.
What is Dianthus as a world entirely?
It is important for me to explain this: Dianthus is a magical realm and a parallel to Earth. A realm discovered and formed by the first Magi millions of years ago. Although it shares a similar planetary structure to our own, including the core, its nations are like alternate versions of Earth. They share roots in familiar traditions, cultures, and religions, but have diverged to develop their own unique names and styles of operation. Many of these nations are ruled by monarchies and adhere to a strict egalitarian system that is heavily influenced by their most powerful and immortal magic users, the Dia. Each nation has its own history and unique path to where they are today, making Dianthus a world that is both familiar and strikingly different from our own.
The story and timeline is set in modern time: But I like to think it’s set around 2017 – 2018, with more advanced technology, economy, medical care and etc. But I am thinking of changing to be somewhere around 2023 – 2024, but I don’t know yet.
I would also like to add: This is a work of FICTION and it does not need to be overanalyze it’s realism and applicability to the realm world. It’s not Garden of Eden where everything is perfect, everyone get what they want and so on. The people still struggle in their own lives with violence, injustice, education and etc.
Dianthus have their own Culture? Tradition? Religion?
Yes, like mentioned before. It share roots in familiar traditions, cultures and religions, but they do add a couple of magical element to it.
When it comes to religion; Dianthus does have their own religion that separates from other religions and people convert to with their own gods, mythologies and stories.
Do the people of Dianthus learn of Earth? Do they get involve in some way? Had they had war with each other?
Yes. It’s important for every generation to know where they come from and who they still are. They are Humans with special gifts they must not take for granted. Some Mage students take additional classes to learn of Earth history.
While they would love to help people of Earth, both Mages and Common Folk, is best to keep the magic inside of Dianthus or else there will be extreme consequences if powerful magic goes to Earth. However, it is true that certain Mages through histories have helped the people with their magic but overtime they became just stories and mythologies.
Yes. Dianthus Nations had their own wars and at the time the rulers of the Dia Nations did not got involved until their students (who are a couple thousand years old) came to the throne.
Why is it called Dianthus?
At first I was looking for name ideas for this series as I had gone through many names depending on what state it was in. At one point I was looking through flower names and found the carnation flower which is also called Dianthus and in the language of flowers it means affection, love and gratitude. So I chose the name Dianthus because it sounded right to me and I wanted to create a world with a welcoming and loving atmosphere where people are not only biologically connected but also magically.
Carnation flower also has many other meanings, like in Greek mythology, the flower is known as “Flowers of the Gods” and I just find that interested.
What inspired Dianthus? What is the genre?
My inspiration of Dianthus and most of my characters come from Naruto, Black Clover, Steven Universe, Wix Club, Sailor Moon, Little Witch Academia, My Little Pony, Harry Potter, Sofia The First, My Hero Academia, The Owl House, Adventure Time along with various fairy tales, fantasy and mythologies.
Genre: Magic/Fantasy. Slice of Life. Adventure. Paranormal. Comedy. Friendship. Family. Musical/Songs.
Because I freaking love musicals. I love to imagine it will be full of songs, but unfortunately I am not a songwriter but maybe I might be able to write a couple in the future.
So that basically it for now – I think?
If you wish to learn more in dept of the system, you can go to my Toyhou.se account where you can find the lore of Dianthus/Mage but just so you know it’s not 100% finish and subject to change as I will work on it again when I have the time.
I really hope that one day, when I feel comfortable with everything, I will be able to create a full-fledged comic or animation, but until then I'll continue to write and experimenting with my ideas.
This is where I'll end this, but feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to answer them ^^
