Erin's the one responsible for creating the AI that assimilated most of the Grox and ultimately led to the Grox you see in game existing- and is very haunted by it... the AI was supposed to solve world peace, and thought "no more free will" was a good solution. Now, in her old age, she's a space captain, and strives to defeat the monster she's created and somehow restore her species back to how it was.
