i may be in the minority when i say this but every time that damned musksite makes another awful decision i grin with sadistic joy. i love seeing social media platforms that consistently make awful decisions start to face the consequences of their actions, because that means that hopefully, just maybe, other popular platforms see all that happen and get scared enough to fix themselves, or go under too as a direct result of being absolutely awful.
anyways i really hope instagram is the next to go, which is followed up by youtube not falling but getting scared enough by the other platforms failing that it makes some actual positive changes to their platform. instagram is currently my least favorite social media because:
- scammers and dropshippers popping up really often and getting bots to make their stuff look more "real"
- everyone that constantly uses rage bait to try and farm engagement
- the sheer amount of awful promoted content
- people in the comments being genuinely awful
- people starting discourse over the dumbest things imaginable
- probably the biggest reason out of all of these: you can't curate your experience accurately.
that last one is huge. i tried to do so by blocking every account that annoyed me or was just all around terrible, and you know what instagram did? i sure didn't detect me blocking all the accounts i did and tune my algorithm so that i saw the content i preferred. no, no. instead, it fed me even MORE of this content, hoping i would interact with it. i guess algorithms dont hear the "don't" when i say i DON'T want personal trainers, cryptocurrencies, religious stuff, or those people who post a meme in a reel and then put themselves underneath it looking at the camera and ultimately adding nothing to the content they stole in my fyp. probably gonna leave that platform soon too.
im okay with bluesky. for now. what im worried is gonna happen is that the dumber side of discourse is gonna come over and plant its seeds in bluesky, and then the cycle will repeat. im just tired of the way these platforms just... make people dumb. i am so tired of the exploitation and pure evil that has consistently been so easy to find in these places. i want it all gone. please.
