"Evolution has created an astounding number of various creatures. Not one however deserves the respected wonder the genus Canidae has earned."

The cast of the 1994 animated feature, Felidae, as dogs. I'm pretty sure the plot of the movie would be exactly the same and I purely did this to fiddle with dog breeds and try and reflect the characters and their designs through them. Some are more obvious than others but here's why I went with each breed. I am going to ruin the movie for you, so you've been warned in case you haven't viewed it yet.

Also, if you do plan to view it, please note that it contains EXTREME violence and adult scenes. This isn't a fun cat movie. It's essentially an animated psychological thriller with cats.

Francis - From the start, I wanted a breed of police dog for Francis purely because of his keen, detective mind and his outstanding intelligence. I didn't really want to go with a German shepherd because I didn't feel their build suited Francis so I went with a Belgian Malinois instead due to their thinner, more graceful appearance. Nothing really deeper than that.

Bluebeard - Due to his docked tail, I was originally going to do Bluebeard as a corgi but I felt that was just silly and went with an American Bulldog due to it matching both Bluebeard's appearance and personality perfectly. Also, these dogs and other bulldog breeds spend a good portion of their life looking grumpy/tough so it was a no-brainer really.

Pascal - The great thing about Pascal's character design is how incredibly misleading it is as opposed to that of Kong or even Bluebeard, so I decided to go with a terrier breed. Specifically a Fox Wire Terrier. Think of him as Dodger's evil cousin or something. Terriers are known for their cute, teddy bear like appearances but they are renowned for their fearless and savage ways of dispatching rats and foxes and so on. As a result, dog!Pascal would have absolutely no problem tearing into the necks of his victims with his powerful bite and jaws and would have the cute appearance to put off suspicion.

Felicity - She was a Russian Blue in the movie so I just went for a Russian breed of dog that was both elegant and lean: a Borzoi.

Kong - Google Tibetan Mastiff and marvel at how immense and powerful these dogs are and that's pretty much enough explanation as to why I chose this breed for Kong. The breed just screams 'big and scary tank dog of death and destruction'.

Jesaja - I wanted both a breed that looks old and tattered but is also a breed of gun dog, which are used to retrieve the bodies of dead quarry for hunters. Jesaja's role in the movie is to retrieve the bodies of the dead for his temple so I went for a Schnauzer. He kinda reminds me of Tramp's long lost brother who is always sad and misunderstood as fuck.

Joker - His piercing blue eyes immediately reminded me of huskies. I went with a Malamute tho, due to their added fluffiness.

Nhozemphtekh - Due to this character's breed being a major plot point in the movie, I went with the most ancient breed of dog (Afghan Hound) and threw in some Saluki traits to make her breed seem both "old" and "new".

The Prophet/"Canidae" - Similar to Nhozemphtekh, I went with an "ancient" breed of dog to represent Canidae itself. Pharaoh Hounds are known for heavily resembling Anubis, a canine god of Ancient Egypt, so it made sense to have the "god" of dogs be this breed.

Hermann and Hermann - So, I originally designed these two around Mexican hairless dogs because they're Oriental-type cats and have leaner features but Mexican hairless dogs are too 'rounded' for these guys and their features so I went with making them into Manchester terriers. They're essentially mini Dobermans in appearance.

Pepeline - Her ancestor (Joker) is an Alaskan Malamute in this so making her an Alaskan Klee Kai mix is a no brainer tbh. I also know she has a more greyish coat in the movie but the script describes her as a white cat in reality so her fur is a lil lighter here.
