INTRO:
I came here to infodump about one of my fav characters ever, José Carioca!! Also known in brazil as Zé Carioca! I'm very passionate about this character and think of him very critically as he's meant to represent brazil from an outsider perspective by Disney. Yep, he's a Disney character and you probably haven't heard of him!

LET'S GET TO IT!
Once apon a time in world war 2 disney received a suggestion from certain um... political sources... to create characters to "bring a sense of union" to the rest of America with the US to then have somekind of advantage in ww2 with the people of the continent united.

sooooo after some lots of traveling and surprisingly positive studies of the culture of and Brazil and maybe of Mexico(can't say myself as I'm not Mexican) by disney artists they created two lovely bird friends for Donald duck (ps. there are some controversies that maybe the character design of José was stolen from a brazilian artist but I don't know about the conclusion of that)

They were Panchito the Mexican rooster (he has stereotyped guns to shoot to the sky with lol, another thing is that his full name is HUGGGEEEE and its a rlly fun gag, he has worn dresses many times in his comics so that's rlly cool too) and (my favorite) Zé Carioca the brazilian green parrot!! (Carioca is a slang term for someone who was born in Rio de Janeiro, in his comics he has two nephews he treats as his own children and many fun friends of his own too, he often has to run from ppl he's in debt with and is inspired by the "malandro" gentleman from that time of Brazil, they were ladiesman who were known for being slicker and smart and very charismatic)

together they made "the three Caballeros"!!!!
fun fact: in the original official lyrics of their theme song they call themselves "three gay caballeros" since at the time it only meant happy but it's real funny since it's definitely a win for ppl who ship them all together!

I connect a whole lot with Zé carioca! despite me being Paulista (born in São Paulo) instead of Carioca XDD

The first films he was featured in were INCREDIBLE(such as in Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros), and so lovingly made. They may have been flawed in quite a few ways but the first ones way less than more recent ones I'd say and one of the reasons for that is the guy who used to first voice Zé, José do Patrocínio de Oliveira! He had an incredibly charismatic voice and IT WAS SO SO PERFECT FOR ZÉ but most importantly HE WAS BRAZILIAN! And that's where the newer voice actors fail to do a good job, after José died the character's VAs started to not be brazilian and the ones from the US specially many times do a horrid SPANISH accent for Zé despite the OLDER films PERFECTLY INCORPORATING the fact that Brazilians DO NOT SPEAK SPANISH AND SPEAK PORTUGUESE INSTEAD ! (in case you don't know this basic fact abt Brazil, the Portuguese were the ones to colonize Brazil, not The Spanish! So brazilians speak Portuguese!)

CONCLUSION:
All in all, I love Zé Carioca however I think him, as a representation of Brazil, could be better specially considering there was a downgrade the representation had time...

believe me or not, brazil lacks most of the Zé Carioca merch which is something I will NEVER understand..like.... it's THE target audience for this character... but ofc they don't actually care abt Brazil that much to even make merch accessible to brazilians, so here I am, now living in Portugal, with the José Carioca merch I had to get from JAPAN. XD (WHY IS JAPAN THE PLACE WITH THE MOST AMOUNT OF ZÉ MERCH????? CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME???)
