Lacey is from an area called the Ashfall Wastelands, which is a craggy place with geysers and hyenas and vultures and the occassional man-eating plant. The land is isolated and hostile so wizards have been going there to practice forbidden ancient magic in secret. There is also a more recent issue with reanimated skeletons mobilising in the area for mysterious reasons. But well those last 2 things are probably unrelated
