The fog was our first clue that something was wrong. It came so suddenly, like the desert itself was a mirage and we were all floating in this sea of blurry nothingness. The only point of reference was a glow on the distance -- the neon sign of the motel. We should've kept driving. We shouldn't have stopped. Because the moment we pulled into the parking lot, that's when everything went so wrong.
