This piece from early 2022 has a style inspired by the Popeye cartoon. You know how Mario was initially inspired by Popeye? I thought to myself, "What if Sonic was also inspired by Popeye?". The illustration features Sonic as 'Mr. Needlemouse', a draft name before SEGA landed on 'Sonic', running across a bridge at Green Hill Zone while carrying a box with a diamond promise ring, the diamond actually being one of the seven Chaos Emeralds. He goes to confront a Bluto-inspired Dr. Robotnik holding a brown checkered wrecking ball by a chain, just like the official first boss fight, only with three holes so that it resembles a cartoony bowling ball. Hanging above them is Modanna, a scrapped concept art character who was meant to be Sonic's love interest, filling the role of Olive Oyl here as she comically shouts the title sequence of the hypothetical game while hanging precariously on a giant warp ring. The other side of the ring shows the dimension in which the special stages are held, and two more Chaos Emeralds are floating behind Modanna. Mr. Needlemouse's design here is also based on early concept art for Sonic himself.
