This young woman is a magician(-in-practice) who wants to stop the romans and their leader, Leonius, from taking Egypt as theirs - and to prove egyptians are not some weaksauce nation the romans can control. The reason of her becoming a magician(-in-practice) is because she found a spell book when visiting her grandmother's grave to pay respects to - along with the fact that the soul of her grandmother now resides in Masika's pet cat, Iris. With her friends - a turtle priest that has recently graduated called Turo, an ox soldier-in-training called Canopus - who's also the General's son, a roman slave now freed jackal archer called Gahiji and a jewel wasp amazon called Zuberi - they're on an adventure against the romans, as well as scorpion pirate queen Rabiah and her crew.
