They are most likely interdimensional beings, creatures/people who, upon death, have ascended to a different dimension and tend to attempt to cross between dimensions to visit us. They are likely never fully present due to the fact that upon death with a lack of full revival, they are unable to fully visit this dimension ever again—they are only able to become close enough to be vaguely visible to us, but never fully present as solid, fully-visible beings.
