Basically Chrys was in love with Leighton, Crystal's big brother who passed away in a flooding incident. Both Crystal and Chrys have kinetic powers, with Crystal having crystallokinesis and Chrys having hydrakinesis.

They exist in a world where kinetic powers are frowned upon and Chryst especially hates his powers, something Leighton tried to persuade him out of but an accident regarding Chrys' powers lead to Leighton's death.

Chrys now looks after Crystal in Leighton's place but she doesn't know Chrys is involved in her brother's death. If she did though, she wouldn't blame him for it.
