I don't underline the fact that Creature isn't just a human often. Even in the actual "Phase shift" story writings it's not the main theme, though a lot of Engineer's problems caused with Creature's origin.
Creature is a biomechanical human, Engineer's own copy, 20% of living thing and 80% a machine. The original goal of this experiment (uncoordinated, secret and controversial) was to create an own backup, a reserve life much more survivable and technically perfect. This idea is a result of time loss fears and general not very normal mental state of the scientist. He had seen too much. But later, when the project was started and there was no way back, too much time and resources already spent, Engineer met Beta, who became his close friend, the first friend for many lonely years. Under Beta's influence Engineer changes his mind and lets the biomech live his own life, not being obligated to live instead of his creator, being a replace. Though, after all, Creature takes a replace role in some way, to fill a hole in Engineer's soul
