Years ago, my local lapidary society had a metalcasting class and I took it. I used silver clay to form an abstract shaped piece and then stamp to make a pattern. Then I put a tiny faceted sapphire into the center (I bought the gem from the teacher). After heating up the metal I painted the metal with liquid gold. I am still pretty proud of the piece but I may need to extend the chain.
