As much as there is media out there I like, I am not afraid to critique the flaws of media I like. It is only fair after all.
So, here begins the list of my most loathed characters from media I like.
Edward/Gilbert Chris Von Muire (Final Fantasy IV): Good lord, I cannot stand Edward the bard. He is such an unfunny joke of a character. I mean, Edward is so weak and useless, he gets put in his place by a seven year old girl. Talk about sad and pathetic. Edward, along Umaro from Final Fantasy VI, are the most dead on arrival characters in all the Final Fantasy series ever.
Mallow (Super Mario RPG): My my, this character is a total whiny crybaby, to the point I just wanted to read him the riot act. I mean, even the quintessential damsel in distress, Princess Peach, is more of an awesome, tough character than Mallow. No wonder Mallow never showed up ever again in any other Mario games. He is pure cringe.
Irwin and Mathilda (Legend of Mana): Good god, this pairing is so toxic, but it isn't even an interesting take on a toxic relationship, only a rage inducing one. It was all their fault that Escad and Daena went from close childhood friends, to mortal enemies out for each other's blood. Though to be fair, I thought the ending to their story arc is satisfying and well deserved (For the most part anyways. Both Escad and Daena deserved better). People and characters who sabotage life long friendships are total scumbags I have no sympathy for.
Lynn Minmei (Macross series): The only redeeming quality of Minmei, is her Japanese voice actress. But other than that, she is such an unintentionally unsympathetic, wishy-washy, bratty piece of work. I wonder what Hikaru even saw in her to begin with.
Princess Yoyo/Empress Yoyo (Bahamut Lagoon): The only redeeming quality of Yoyo, is that she is fun and useful in battle, as well as a fun character to illustrate. But other than that, I think is way too similar to Lynn Minmei from Macross, that I couldn't bring myself to sympathize with her. Both Byuu and Palpaleos deserve better than her.
Boober Fraggle (Fraggle Rock): Compared to the other Fraggles, Boober is a boring, soggy lettuce of a character. My least favorite episode of Fraggle Rock (other than the Great Radish Famine), are episodes with Boober being the main character. To me, he is more minor character material than main character material.
Lucky Chloe (Tekken series): Good lordy, this girl is such an obnoxious brat, that I am glad she never appeared in Tekken 8. She is that unlikable of a character. I will never forgive her for how she treated Eddy Gordo like the butt of the joke.
All Maudra Mayrin (The Dark Crystal series): Talk about one of the worst mothers in fictional storytelling. She picks Brea as a favorite child, while treating her other two daughters, Seladon and Tavra, like trash, despite Seladon being next in line to the throne. No wonder Seladon grew up to be cold, spiteful, and calculating. I cheered and clapped when High Priest SkekZok, and General SkekVar slayed this sad excuse for a mother (as well as a sad excuse for a leader to boot).
Exdeath (Final Fantasy V): As much as I love and adore FFV, I do think Exdeath comes off a weak and out of place villain in the game. He fits in more as villain in a Super Sentai/Power Rangers show more than a Final Fantasy game. I thought Gilgamesh should have been the main antagonist instead.
Setsuka, Pyrrha Alexandra, and Patroklos Alexandra (Soulcalibur series): These three are my most loathed SC characters of all time. Setsuka has a pretty character design, and her backstory is okay, though not as memorable as the backstories of the other characters, but I HATE fighting her so much. She is as difficult and cheap as a final boss, but she's a minor character, not a final boss. Fighting Setsuka puts me in a bad mood. While Pyrrha and Patroklos are such badly written and unlikable creator's pets, that I am glad that Soulcalibur VI rebooted the series, so we wouldn't deal with this gruesome twosome ever again.
So there you have it. Here are the worst characters from media I like. If you like these characters, that is okay, I respect your opinion either way.
As much as there is media out there I dislike, I try to find the positive in them, just like I am not afraid to critique the flaws of media I like. It is only fair after all.
So, here begins the list of my favorite characters from media I dislike.
Percy the Pug and Meeko the Raccoon (Disney's Pocahontas): Disney's Pocahontas isn't my cup of tea, when it comes to Disney movies, but I do think the characters of Meeko the Raccoon and Percy the Pug are cute as a button. If they made a historical fiction film about Meeko and Percy as the main characters, I would probably watch it in seconds. Besides, pugs are one of my most favorite dog breeds of all time. Pugs are such little doggy darlings to me.
Amarylis (High Guardian Spice): Yeah yeah, I know, and I agree with most of the critics of HGS, the show is dead on arrival for the most part. But I do like the character of Amarylis, and how she puts the creator's darling, Sage, through the ringer. I just say take her out of HGS, and put her in a better show.
Rubeus Hagrid (Harry Potter series): After re-reading the Harry Potter series, despite the toxic fandom annoying the heck outta me, I realized the series is not all that great as I remembered it. Though I do enjoy the character of Hagrid. He is fascinated with monsters and mythical creatures, just like I am. Out of all the characters in the series, Hagrid is the one I relate to the most, despite not being a main character.
Lenneth Valkyrie, Lucian, Arngrim and Princess Jelanda (Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth): I used to like the very first Valkyrie Profile game when I was younger, but after playing the superior sequels, I found the game has aged poorly IMO. Though I do like the manga based off the game, and I think the characters of Lenneth, Lucian, Arngrim and Jelanda are enjoyable, as well as standing out from the rest of the cast. Just a shame that there is just too much plot filler, plot holes, and unnecessary characters, who have little bearing on the main plot. And don't me started on the rancid voice acting!
Connie Maheswaran and her family (Steven Universe): IMO, I thought Connie made better main character material than Steven ever did. She is not afraid to stand up to the crystal gems, and call them out on their childish, petty behavior. I hate how fans started to hate on her for liking Steven as just a friend in SU Future. I personally liked that plot twist, because Steven was a bit too mentally unstable and immature to be in a relationship. Also, am I the only one who think Steven is a gender swapped self insert of Rebecca Sugar? I mean, Rebecca looks like a thinner, adult, female (non binary?) version of Steven. This cannot be a coincidence, can it?
The Majestic Four (Hauzen, Saizou, Meifa, and Mitra) (Treasure of the Rudras): With the playable characters being annoying and too dumb to live (despite the plot telling us the playable characters are smart and wise), and when the bosses come off as smart and having common sense, then there is something wrong here. The Majestic Four should have been the playable characters the entire time, not a bunch of blithering idiots who mess up the balance of the world and survival of all life in the world. Were the writers of the game drunk? Or is it just a bad case of executive meddling? You decide!
Marcy (Hush Hush series): Marcy is a textbook definition of a “designated villain”, as well as being an unintentionally sympathetic and likable character. I mean, she is a good girl, compared to the “heroine”, Nora Grey. Nora is much worse than Bella Swan, and I think Nora and Patch are perfect for each other, because they are both equally horrible, revolting, unintentionally unlikable characters. It saddened me that Marcy gets put though the ringer, and doesn't get a satisfying closure to her story arc. What a crying shame.
Anthony Higgs (Metroid: Other M): Yes, I know Metroid: Other M was a crap show, but I thought the character Anthony Higgs is one of the few redeeming qualities of the game. Why wasn't he the main character of the game, instead of ruining Samus' character (As well as wrecking the whole entire canon of the Metroid series in the process.). If Nintendo wasn't whipped by their toxic fan community, I think it would be awesome if Nintendo created a Metroid spin off series with Anthony being the main playable character. Heck, even a Metroid spin off series with a villain lead, such as Raven Beak, would be an awesome concept. It worked for the Makaimura series with Firebrand/Red Arrimer, so why not the Metroid series?
Tifa Lockheart, Barrett Wallace, and Yuffie Kisaragi (Final Fantasy VII series): Out of the playable cast of FFVII, I think Tifa, Barrett and Yuffie are the most likable and memorable of the group. Everyone else comes off as a soggy lettuce (Cloud Strife), a mere plot device (Aerith Gainsborough), or being gallstone annoying as heck (Cait Sith).
Most of the cast of Final Fantasy VI (except for Terra, Kefka, and Umaro): The problem with Final Fantasy VI, other than the broken, boring game play, as well as the tedious second half of the game (complete with a lame cop out ending), is that there are too many characters in the game. But at least most of the major characters are enjoyable and have decent writing (unlike the characters of Treasure of the Rudras). Though why I don't like Terra, Kefka, and Umaro, is that Terra, while having a beautiful character design, is a worse case scenario of badly executed, badly written character who had the potential to be interesting (being a creator's pet does not help matters much either). Kefka is a watered down version of Batman's The Joker, with even less backstory and paper thin villain motivation. And Umaro? Well..... Umaro is dead on arrival, just like Edward/Gilbert from Final Fantasy IV. Though the other playable cast of characters tend to be decent, especially Locke, Celes, Shadow, Setzer, Mog, Strago and Relm. They all deserved better in the end. Me thinks FFVI was made in the wrong decade on the wrong video game system. As much as I love the SNES/Super Famicom, at least I admit it had limited technology at the time of its conception (especially back in 1994, before games like Chrono Trigger, Terranigma, and Bahamut Lagoon were made).
So there you have it. Here are the best character in media I dislike. Now, I am going to work on the worst characters from media I like.
Hey there everyone,
Yes, I know, I am yet another refugee from Deviant Art, and I think I like this site a whole lot more.
I might make Sheezy my main place to upload art. Once I move into my new supported living apartment, I am going to delete my dA account and make this site one of my online homes for art.
Good day. Wish me luck.
