One of the most popular pet birds in the world, the Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus ) is what often comes to mind when people hear, say or think of the word "parakeet" in my dictionary. Native to the shrublands and semi-deserts of central Australia. In the wild, these gregarious, social birds have yellow heads and green feathering to camouflage amongst the scrubby vegetation and are nomadically flying in huge flocks to find better food and water sources, such as seeds, leaves, shoots and occassionally insects. Domestic budgies come in a wide variety of colors, from albino, yellow, and even blue like the one I drew.
