Before Godzilla 1998 (or Zilla, if you wanna refer to it as), there were a few attempts to make an American Godzilla movie. One of them would've had Godzilla pitted against a new space monster called "The Gryphon", and was to be directed by Jan de Bont (Speed) and written by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot (Aladdin and four of the five Pirates of the Caribbean movies). Sadly, the project fell through when Tristar and de Bont couldn't find common ground with the budget, thus it would dissolve and morph into the infamous '98 flick we all know today. Looking back at this project, it's a massive shame that we didn't get this project as it could've easily been the best American Godzilla movie that we could've ever gotten, and it didn't happen because Tristar got cold feet at the budget, even though the '98 movie costed just as much, if not more so than what was originally budgeted (smooth move, Tristar....-_-). Anywho, I made this drawing during a time when I was obsessed and fascinated by the project and it took me a couple weeks (with breaks) to get it done, and...well, hopefully it shows!
