I redesigned some of the cells in Virus Attack, and I gave them two forms as well.
Here's an alveolar macrophage (or dust cell), a type of macrophage more specifically found in the lungs. Dust cells keep the lungs clean by eating the dust particles and other foreign stuff that enter your lungs when you inhale. You can see the dust swirling around in the cell-shaped tailtip, and bits of SARS-CoV-2 in the activated form. They also eat dead cells and thus they still have the function to give their late family/friends a 'proper burial' at the end of funeral ceremonies. Dust cells live in your alveoli, where they protect the pneumocytes (epithelial type cells that make sure your alveoli are able to expand properly, by keeping the walls moist and smooth).
When inactive, yet doing their usual patrolling and cleaning tasks, dust cells look like small house cats. But, when activated during an respiratory infection, they grow larger than most cells and look more like a cat x homotherium hybrid. Cells produce different proteins or cytokines for different functions, and said proteins or cytokines may change their appearance and activates certain functions.
The character pictured is Earl. I didn't liked his old design anymore, and his pale colors looked lame on the activated form anyway, so I redesigned him. Now he actually looks MUCH better... but, I might going to strain myself too much whenever I have to draw him.... So many details XD
