My personal concept for Thoon, inspired by the mysteries surrounding the all-but abandoned concept in D&D lore. This is a flipped take on the subject that explores how positive doctrine and theology is abused and twisted for power and personal gain. My iteration of Thoon begins as just a person, the mind behind Thoonism. Thoonism is not to be confused with The Cult of Thoon in the canon materials, though both are equally reviled by Ilsensine illithids.

Thoon, known to his ideological opponents as Thoon the Heretic, is an illithid extremist who has achieved some modicum of notoriety in the galaxy for his eagerness to break with the traditions of illithid society and question the ”Mind Flayer" patron deity, Ilsensine. To outsiders, specifically non-illithids, Thoon seems like an extremely progressive mind. He is fully willing to work with other races to liberate illithids from the tyranny of, what he claims, is a parasitic infection wreaking havoc on his people across the multiverse. Illithids who have never met Thoon or his followers tend to know a surprising amount about him, or at very least they have heard rumors of his radical beliefs or discoveries.
