Even after the impostor spirit possessing Bramblestar was exposed, the damage had been done. Applespot had seen how many cats were willing to believe him just because he was leader. How cats had died because of such stupidity. The Clans had learned nothing from Brokenstar and Tigerstar. Applespot was absolutely done with the Clans now, having completely lost hope for them ever getting better. So when a group of warriors voiced their displeasure and that they would leave to figure out if they even wanted to stay in ThunderClan, Applespot eagerly joined them. He went his own way, determined to never see another Clan cat again.
