- He/Him
Hey there I'm Vidknight I'm 19 years old. I'm a 3d artist who is here to share artwork and view other people artworks. Also I'm always open to critiques as long as it respectful and not unnecessarily rude.
Hey so this is part one of probably a series? If I feel like it, but if not than here is the one, and only entry ever made.
I don't know how to start this except for the fact that I'm learning blender mostly because I want to make the move over there. Don't get me wrong SFM is fine, and all, and you can create some damn fine stuff with SFM, but it does not allow you to create models which to most people they don't care about, but for me someone who want to create my own models it can feel limiting. Yea you can model hack which is what I mostly do, but it can only get you so far before it start to feel limiting again.
I had blender installed on my computer for a while yet rarely opened it because I was to scared of all the different buttons, and crap everywhere. Until just a couple of days ago I went "fuck it", and decided to get serious about learning blender, and here I am on what I think is day 5 of me learning it so here's me going over my journey so far with a couple of jokes that I hope make you breath out your nose a bit.
Now first thing first I started with watching the Blender Guru donut tutorial which is great all I got to do is watch through the whole tutorial get a firm understanding of blender, and I'll be on my way on becoming a blender artist. Which is the smart thing to do unfortunately I'm not smart so I stopped at part 3. That's not to say I'm not going to stop I'm still going to finish watching the whole thing, but I only stopped because I wanted to try my hand in creating my own stuff without the need of a tutorial so I attempted two different renders of my TVsona (Because his beauty need to be in every art program ever) to see what I can do.
I wanted to go with a low poly style since that is my favorite type of 3d artwork, and It's easy on my computer so my first attempt was Ok for the most part I get that I'm new, but I felt I could of done a bit better here. Some mistakes I made was somehow linking the pants, and torso to the same texture making it hard for me to texture anything. Also I didn't bother to texture anything at all I somehow messed up somewhere, and I was not able to paint anything so I had to rely on solid colors this isn't bad, but come on now I know I could do better. Also no bucket hat he might as well be naked
Second time around, and not going to lie I'm incredibly happy about this one sure it's nothing amazing (especially no bucket hat >:( ), but for my second go this is great. This time I was able to add textures, and as such gave some color to everything plus a little detail. He's no longer wearing a goofy jumpsuit, and it overall looks better. Granted texturing was still a problem for me because the model wasn't perfect, and some parts of the body was not able to be painted over properly. But hey the end results is something I'm happy with.
In fact I was so happy I wanted to try adding a rig so I looked up a tutorial for that, added a rig, was happy with the bone placements, and then I tried to move a bone, and...! DEAR GOD! believe it or not this is the more tame example, if I tried moving the arm he becomes absolutely deformed. Yes I know about weight painting, but once again due to how the model is built I just couldn't paint over certain areas like the head for example. So I need to learn a bit before I try to attempt rigging again.
Alright so this was a long ass ramble so basically what do I need to learn here? I feel that I got the basic of modeling down it just now comes down to practice, practice, and practice. Texturing is something I need to learn more as well, and rigging is it own beast. But overall for 4-5 days of learning blender I'm pretty happy with the progress I made.
I feel that I should end here with something funny, but I can't think of anything so uh... yea put your own joke here I guess.
