The protagonist of this short story is Mowgli. Set in the second half of the 19th century in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the story begins deep in the jungle. As a baby, Mowgli, the son of Indian woodcutters, was separated from his parents following Shere Khan's vicious attack on their camp; he was subsequently raised and adopted by a family of wolves.
