I've been working on the lore for SIML's Deities lately (which makes up a SURPRISINGLY huge chunk of the story), so I made some concept art for my favorite gal Maristella :D

Maristella is the Celestial Goddess of the Cosmic Waters, Ocean, and of all mysteries between space and time! she's considered a 'phantom Goddess', meaning that she has many epithets, many unsolved mysteries, AND... a LOT of inconsistent (if not nonsensical) folklore. she might also be a trickster Goddess...? her role in the Caelecosm is mysterious, but she's known to rectify 'impurities' / miasma left behind by mortal and Divine emotions. she cuts these impurities straight from the source with her scythe, and sends them to be washed out through the ocean.

so, I've been connecting with Shinto this past year; Maristella is largely based on my experiences w/ Seoritsu-hime (linked: some AWESOME art + thoughts about her). like Maristella, she is connected to water; she makes up part of the Haraedo no Kami, a group of Deities who purify miasma & sins through the Oceans.

(I'm planning on designing other Deities based on the Haraedo! I'm thinking that Anatolia is Ibukidonushi ... stay tuned for more 👀)
