I tried myself at etching. ^^
First, you carve contours onto a metal plate according to a sketch. Then you cover light areas in lacquer and put the plate for a set duration into acid. Then you cover slightly darker areas into lacquer and repeat. The darkest areas are exposed the longest to the acid. Then you cover the plate with paint per roll and press it into paper for a "print".
