Lazily doodled some designs for Milo + Elias in their version of Dragon Mage AU <3 They get their own! With a different set of plot points...!!! but I was too lazy to do their refs justice so messy scrabbles it is

Milo (on the left) is a well known and respected magic user, having become a sort of prodigy at a young age. He seems very distant and unapproachable to most, but he takes on an apprentice despite his youth for reasons nobody else understands.

Elias (on the right) is striving for the same level of renown and wants more than anything... to reach his potential. He knows he has a knack for it, but struggles to adhere to most magic systems he's been taught, and he feels as though he's spinning his wheels in place without the right kind of teacher. The prospect of becoming Milo's apprentice is enticing, but more of a pipe dream than anything else. Still, he applies for it.

He's chosen because Milo can see he has un-honed talent, unlike a few of the other prospects who just want to show off fkjghsldf but also...because he is a little less fawn-y than the rest, and Milo feels less awkward about talking to him that way.

He's just very awkward with people, he's not nearly as unapproachable as folks take him to be, and once he gets a chance to Teach, He will Not Shut Up (which is a good thing, for Elias)
