Name:
Robin. You can also call me Rob or Ruben.
Favorite kind of art to make:
Digital illustrations, especially rendered ones. My favorite type of digital illustrations to create is close-up composition shots (maximum: torso/thigh-up shots). I especially adore depicting anthropomorphic animal characters of many species.
Digital or traditional art?
Digital for the most part. I have completely forgotten how to draw traditional art that isn't doodles, especially from life and imagination. It can also occasionally be difficult to draw traditional art from photographic references, too. I'm considering getting back into traditional art someday, but for now, I'm primarily a digital artist.
Art school or self taught?
Self-taught. I learn techniques from other artists and tutorials, but no specialized or formal training otherwise.
Realism or stylized art?
Realism and semi-realism (semi-stylized).
Characters or landscapes?
Characters. I may practice landscapes in the future since it may assist me with background work.
Favorite colors:
Black, purple, and red!
Themes or subjects in your art:
Gothic aesthetics, semi-vintage fashion (whenever possible), mostly drawings of Beckham and Roger. I'd love to push vintage aesthetics further, especially 1940s-1950s aesthetics, but Roger doesn't typically look very vintage because he's supposed to have "caveman" hair as, technically, he is an in-universe equivalent of a caveman. (He also rarely styles it because he thinks curlier/wavy hair will make him look more feminine than straighter hairstyles (which existed to an extent in the 1940s-1950s but were more uncommon), and he enjoys his long hair. If caveman isn't an appropriate aesthetic, you can think of indigenous Americans who choose to have long, straight hair, from many different eras.
Favorite art movements:
Realism, photorealism, pop art, Baroque, Romanticism, Renaissance.
Artists who inspire you:
One of my biggest inspirations right now is brushnik on Instagram, but I also really am inspired by drawalotasaur, hydde (back when they went by neonhorns, as the 2018-2019 era of their work is my inspiration), and ARCR-Cric. Coloring-wise, I take inspiration from pngstalin.
Movies, tv, games, music, or books that inspire you:
Daria, The Addams Family franchise, The Curious Creations of Christine McConnel, Series of Unfortunate Events, Futurama. Futurama, especially, has been a major inspiration for me and my sci-fi ideas. I also pay some form of homage to the Disney ducks, especially DuckTales 1987 and Carl Barks's comics.
Do you have OCs? Share your favorites.
Roger Grimdark, my velociraptor fursona, and Beckham Shepherd, Roger's borzoi boyfriend. They are the love of my life, to say the least. I'm glad Roger could grow with me, my longest-lasting fursona ever, and that Beckham could grow with Roger. May they comfort me forever.
Your biggest art strengths:
I've been told I'm amazing at rendering.
Your biggest art weakness:
Linework quality and anatomy.
Proudest art achievements:
14 commissions in 1 year (2024)!
The hardest thing about being an artist:
Making money from your art, especially as AI becomes more popular, cheaper, and faster. Also, gathering up an audience of true fans/orbitors to begin with (without having an amazing art style or creating popular fanart). It's especially difficult to build a fanbase for your original characters these days.
The people who love and support your art:
My family and many kind strangers!
Do you sell your art or take commissions?
I used to take commissions, but I'm taking a break from it, so I can concentrate on improving my artwork, drawing what I want, working on personal comics and animations, and earning additional income from other sources.
Art Advice for your younger self:
Please get inspired by the semi-realistic artists you've seen! You'll move to semi-realism eventually anyway, and semi-realism was what always secretly inspired you! Also, utilize real-life references and digital 3D anatomy dolls for anatomy practice! That way, it'll be easier by now!
