‘Though in honesty now
I am having some doubts
I was placed here with great fanfare in seventeen twenty nine
I’ve lost my fountain now
I once lost my crown
I was sidelined for decades to the park by the trainline
But have faith my believers that’s all just a flicker in time cos
I AM THE MIGHTY NEPTUNE AND I’LL BRING YOU THE SEA
I AM THE MIGHTY NEPTUNE AND I’LL BRING YOU THE SEA
I AM THE MIGHTY NEPTUNE AND I’LL BRING YOU THE SEA
I AM THE MIGHTY NEPTUNE AND I’LL BRING YOU THE SEA’

This month, in the lead up to the ‘Durham, Come Save Me’ album launch, I’ll be sharing some of the ideas and sketches that led to the final design of the album artwork.
Most of these are me just getting ideas out of my head and onto the page, so expect extremely loose, quick drawings that haven’t been polished very much, if at all.
Today’s sketch’s were inspired by the song ‘I AM THE MIGHTY NEPTUNE’
I’ve walked past this statue in Durham Market Place hundreds of times and never had any idea how old it is and what it represents. I never gave it much thought at all.
In the 1700’s, there was a plan to bring ships up the river Wear and create a canal to Durham. The statue of Neptune was erected as a symbol of the project. Imagine how different Durham could be today if it had been a port City for a few hundred years!
