Meet the Fennec fox (Vulpes zerda) The smallest fox in the world and overall smallest of the wild dogs, these creatures inhabit the scorching deserts of North Africa. They have the biggest ears relative to body size of any canine, and they're not just for efficient hearing. They also act as radiators to keep the fox cool, dissipating heat from the sweltering climate. Like all desert animals, these omnivores get most of their water and moisture from the food they eat, which include eggs, insects and small mammals. They build elaborate underground dens with multiple exits and entrances to escape the heat during the day and are crepuscular creatures, with cat-like eyes to help them see better in the darkest of nights. Their paws are also covered in thick hairs to prevent their paws from the burning sand and adds traction.
