. I discussed their basic anatomy, basal members, and taxonomic placement last time. I thought for todays image it would be good to name the 8 families that make up the group. The Pharyngolepididae, the Pterygolepididae, the Lasaniidae, the Ramsaasalepididae, the Rhyncholepididae, the Tahulalepididae, the Birkeniidae, and the Septentrioniidae. Of these the first five are represented here, Yes really they're small
First we got the Pharyngolepididae which include only one genus (Pharyngolepis) which contains 3 species.
The next family the Pterygolepididae which consists of only a single genus (Pterygolepis) also found in Norwey but during the early Silurian instead.
The third family Ramsaasalepididae is again a monotypic family containing only a single genus (Ramsaasalepis)
The fourth family the Rhyncholepididae contains a single genus (Rhyncholepis ) which contains two species both of which are found in Late Silurian deposits of Ringerike, Norway, and Estonia.
Last and most bizarre of the families depicted here are the Lasaniidae. This contains only a single species (Lasanius problematicus) though two others have been proposed they seem to be invalid. This family's position within Asaphida has been disputed but as of writing it has not been put elsewhere nor given it's own group hence the problematicus name.
Top Row: Pharyngolepis oblonga, P. heintzi
Second Row: P. kiaeri, Pterygolepis nitidus
Third Row: Lasanius problematicus, Ramsaasalepis porosa
Bottom Row: Rhyncholepis butriangula, R. parvula
If you like to support my art I recently released a book which has gotten an updated second edition as well as now being available as an ebook check it out here.
