This comic was actually printed in Ghoula Comix #2, an extremely short-lived indie comic published in Los Angeles: https://www.amazon.com/GHOULA-Comix-This-City-2/dp/1475140096
The Loon (our ever morphing and flexible '30s-style toon) is driving late at night on a lonely LA street. A storm is brewing. His faithful jalopy runs over a rusty nail, and blows a tire.
Since it'd be dangerous to drive in the rain with a flat tire, our hero looks to the residence next to them, hoping they can help.
The initial inspiration for this comic was the Disney attraction The Tower of Terror, which is one of our favorites. That peculiar and unique hybrid of neo-gothic Victorian and art deco architectural stylings with a sprinkling of ethnic curiosities is really cool, I think. Add that smoky LA nightlife atmosphere and a spooky story, and you've got: period 1930s horror.
To which we added the weirdness of spooky '30s cartoons.
This page, in particular, is inspired by the opening of the Krazy Kat cartoon Krazy Spooks, 1933. It's such a classic set-up: dark and stormy night, the need to find shelter, and a dark, lonely house.
The Loon himself, in this incarnation, is kind of a mix of Goofy, Mortimer Mouse, the Bazooka Joe character Mort (the '96-'03 design), and Honest John from Pinocchio (hence his ratty gloves). His car is mostly inspired by Mickey's car.
