I did a lot of searching for images on Google for reference to do this comic- in particular, I sought inspiration from:
-Stills from '20s and '30s horror films, with few exceptions (such as 1950's Sunset Blvd.)
-Vintage Halloween decorations
-And neo-Egyptian architecture and decorative arts.

The third one first comes into play with this page, by means of the columns and especially the jackal statues in front (inspired by the ones seen in Hollywood's Egyptian Theater). Ancient Egyptian culture was very popular in the '20s and '30s, as seen by Cecil B. DeMille's Cleopatra.
Anubis is the god of mummification and the passage to the underworld- one of his duties is to weigh the dead person's heart and deem it worthy or unworthy. So the two jackals are kinda like the gateway to the spirit world.

That, and they look really cool.
