Shaded pencil drawing of a large, muscular dragon with a human boy relaxing on his claw.

The dragon lowers his head (which is almost as tall as the boy) to the ground to look up at the boy with an amused expression. The dragon's legs and folded wings are in a fairly compact pose, but his tail rests lazily at his side with its tip in the air. His underside and wing membranes are shaded darker than the rest of him.

The boy's arms are crossed. He has one leg propped on the same claw he's sitting on, and the other hangs to the ground. His expression is not visible. He wears a plain shirt and pants.

Like a lot of my favorite pieces, this started as a sort of boredom-relief doodle to loosen up after getting stuck on a figure drawing I never finished. There are nits to pick with the anatomy, to be sure, but I'm really pleased with this. I enjoy the dragon's expression. It was fun to subvert my usual expectations by making the dragon's underbelly darker instead of lighter. I'm really fond of humans as small elements in larger compositions.

It's like… Did you know that when you're an artist, you can draw things that appeal to your own specific tastes and doing so can make you happy? Wild!
