A little late to giving this advice, but for anyone who's interested in stepping out of their comfort zone, but genuinely has no idea what resources are available to them to start, I dug into it for this challenge because I've never made music before either.
You probably want a Digital Audio Workspace (DAW for Short). Most of them are quite expensive, which probably isn't what you want for trying something for the very first time, but this one is free
There are also tutorials for it (This one is allegedly quite good))
and someone has compiled a whole spreadsheet of midis (digital recorded instruments) that are also free to use.
If you want to compose your piece ahead of time, I'd actually suggest Noteflight which I have actually used for choir projects in middle school. It's free to use and it basically allows you to make sheet music that you can play and hear what it sounds like. If you have a basic understanding of sheet music, it's quite easy to use. If you don't... uhhh just put notes in there until it sounds good.
If Midis are too intimidating, you can also record household objects to be your instruments. Personally, I think I'm gonna go that route.
Hopefully this helps someone.
Yeah seconding what hellnu said, mixing it up would be fun and refreshing/balancing it out!
i liked being able to vote for the next theme but i wouldn't mind keeping it as a surprise too, both options sound good to me :D
