(to those who don't know: Miscrits is a creature-collecting game similar to Pokémon, except that there's a simpler elemental system and all Miscrits have four stages/evolutions, which can be achieved by simply levelling up!)
apparently Miscrit sprites are made using vector programs like Illustrator, so i tried to do one myself as a sort of... practice and getting a feel of it.
so i tried Affinity Designer! oh MAN it was difficult at first since i'm so used to Procreate, especially with the shape forming and linework! but i eventtually got the hang of it. i still have a long way to go to learn all of Affinity's features, though, so for now i am trying to make a feel of it.
by the way, i am trying to create a redesign of a Miscrit named Ribos! here's my progress so far with the first stage/evolution! :D
as i've stated in the artwork description, i'm going to accept constructive criticism since it's my first time making something with 100% vectors (especially with the highlight and shadow shapes), but do mind that i'm trying to emulate the Miscrits style.
anyway, i'll try to gain more experience with Affinity Designer soon, and i'm excited to see what more i can do with it especially for future Miscrits designs i will make! :D
(also i may be showing my redesign to the Miscrits Reborn server hours later... but i will be treading with caution since some people there are just toxic and/or inappropriate. i feel like i'm among the few people there with proper online etiquette /srs)
and now i try to rest haha it's past 3 AM here now /lh
it's July 28 in my timezone (PHT / GMT +8), which means it's Bren's birthday!!
i forgor to post this in the morning (my brain's been filled with Miscrits earlier if you can see my first journal of the day in my timezone HAHAHA /lh)
this is also special to me since coincidentally, it's my half birthday!! and i love my boi Bren so much waaaaaaahh
sadly i'm unable to make some art of him today since i'm still slowly recovering from burnout, but hey, it's the thought that counts ^^
(i'll make up to you, Bren ;u;)
this is the latest art i made of Bren which i still love .u.
(also i'm not forcing Art Fighters to check this, but Bren also has an Art Fight page (and i'd really appreciate it, but again not forced)!! i don't think i can revenge for the remainder of the season BUT i will definitely get back to you next season!!)
of course this is assuming that the person would explicitly want their art to be critiqued. or, perhaps, when you're analyzing the art style/design of a game, for example. in particular, my case leans more on the latter.
i'm going to admit that i'm in no means a very expert artist. (i'm probably just in the intermediate level?)
i do have some knowledge of some of the art fundamentals. that knowledge isn't on a very expert level either, but probably just enough that i know that how i can use it to execute and improve my artworks.
the question just came up because i do want to put out my critiques for some Miscrits designs (which i have expressed in my previous journal), with more focus on the official Miscrits designs that came out only during the revival in Miscrits Reborn.
(slightly related, i have my own analysis notes of the original Miscrits' designs that i have since last year, and these notes play a major role in my critiques/comments. i'm still going to update those analysis notes!!)
i'm also doing this for myself and other people who might want to make their own Miscrits designs in the future. it can be helpful for other artists in general too, even if it's just for concept art.
i'm just worried that people might come bash me or cancel me just because i put out a well-intentioned critique despite not being an art guru T^T
DISCLAIMER: i'm still in burnout so don't expect too many attacks from me. but i will try my best to make my attacks as satisfactory as possible for myself ^^
if i couldn't revenge you this year, i will make up for it next year!
this is also a heads up that i have finalized a date on when i will switch midway! at some point at night in July 17 (GMT +8), i will join the ranks of Fossilized Fellows!
here's my profile again: https://artfight.net/~cillagon
here's my card again in case people missed it:
and yep, the character profiles of The Diamond Fellow and Shey are now up!
The Diamond Fellow has crystals (sorta), while dinosaurs are Shey's special interest!! heheheheh
(serious part)
also i'm going to address this since i'll feel guilty if i don't...
i did say at the end of my post-Art Fight 2024 journal entry that i'll be doing a "massive mass attack" this year... but it seems i won't be able to do it. i was really excited on the concept i had in my head last year so i blurted out my plans right away as early as August 2024, but i did not expect that i will still be this tired this year. so i didn't even send out the hitlist form for that.
maybe i'll do the mass attack next time when my energy is more stable. i'm really sorry for those who expect that from me this year T^T /gen
moving forward, i think it's best for me to not announce my intentions to make mass attacks (if any) since i don't want to overwhelm myself and disappoint other people.
though i will keep the concept in mind, and will still probably do it when i feel more confident that i will be able to deliver it.
while making my "Pi-rates!" artwork, i looked through references for button placements since Sindey prefers to present her masculinely, or at least leaning masculine. (because apparently, blouses are weird like that.) i wanted her coat to have its buttons on the male side.
her younger sister Taniya, on the other hand, would have her buttons on the opposite side instead.
so i had my sketch done, and then my line art nearly done. then last night, when i observed the button placements on the blouse i was wearing... the buttons are on the left side when unbuttoned! and then when i observed the button placements on some males wearing polo blouses... it was the same as in Taniya's blouse in the art (i.e., buttons on the right side when unbuttoned)! i internally panicked since i think i confused left and right on the references.
i mean, it's really confusing! i even thought in our country we had the placements reversed, lol.
and then i saw another person whose female college (university) uniform, for some reason, have the same button placements as male blouses i saw earlier. now that's MORE confusing!! which is actually correct?!?! /nm
and when i checked after i got home, welp, turns out the male ones have buttons on the right when unbuttoned, and females have theirs on the left. okay, so that means that university's female uniforms have male button placements...
now i don't really mind either side, but seriously, i don't get why there's a distinction between male and female blouses on the buttons? i mean, i didn't know that this subtle clothing feature is even gendered until i looked for references! whichever side the buttons are, they still have the purpose of closing the blouse when worn!
...okay i know that kind of contradicts my initial premise of wanting Sindey to look masculine, but for some reason i wanted to be... "accurate"? i think i'm still learning to fully let go of the notion that clothing has gender. but the button thing still baffles me. i never noticed until making the artwork.
i ended up not changing the initial sketches and lines in the "Pi-rates!" artwork. i mean, Taniya wouldn't mind wearing a traditionally masculine blouse like that, and Sindey already looks masculine enough in her own eyes haha
