I'm definitely going to do Artfight again this year!
Last year I had to stop midway as I didn't pace myself and burnt out- but this year I intend to do less insane stuff. Maybe. I'm determined to pace myself this year!!! Quality over quantity!!!
You can find me on Artfight by the same username- or click that icon on my socials bar. Or if you're in the far future where that isn't a thing- touch the fleepflorp or whatever.
While I wait to have my upload limit refresh I'll post my long insane responses to the Art History Meme that's been floating around.
How many usernames have you had? (You don't have to share them!)
I've had -quite a few-, but I've tended to stick with the same ones over long periods. I've been on the Internet since I was around 8 years old (that makes… around 17-18 years?) so to list every single one is not something I'll be up to any time soon.
I think one of my favorite usernames (just for the story it provides) was some variation on the-castle-of-aaarghhh on Tumblr. (Monty Python was the big brain reference at the time.) I could never get the number of letters consistent so it was a nightmare to share it with my friends IRL, which led me to changing it to something simpler. Fuck if I remember what it was.
What does your current username mean?
It's a reference to the Oingo Boingo song. Ironically, it's not even my favorite one. That'd be Private Life.
Secretlabz- my other username, is a mad science themed username I chose because I could stylize it well. Imagine my surprise when I found out it's a chair company that already spent like a million dollars on sponsorships for Fortnite streamers. >_<
What is the first program you used to make digital art?
Paint for Microsoft Windows XP. I did a lot of Pokemon sprite splicing as a kid because it was accessible. I made so many fakemon, but I wasn't really good at it and I quickly returned to my previous activities of writing entire novels in composition books XD . It wasn't until I was older and got my sister's hand-me-down Wacom that I started getting serious about digital art.
Where did you first start posting your art?
Probably Deviantart, but I distinctly remember making a Gmail account to send an "award" I had made up to some Pokemon webcomic artist when I was around 8 years old. I felt like I genuinely awarded that person with something, but in retrospect it was just a silly MS paint doodle. I hope they look back on that fondly... ._.
What is the first piece of media you drew fanart for?
Pokemon. I genuinely don't know if I drew any cartoon characters before that. Maybe Tokyo Mew Mew? "orz This is something I genuinely can't remember.
Who was your first self-insert/persona/fursona? What did they mean to you?
My first fursona was a black Tails recolor with purple hair named Toxin. Initially they were very clearly an OC for a fanime I liked at the time, part-dragon lab experiment and all, but I was insistent they were from their own original story I was developing. Later I actually made good on that notion- but it was an incredibly long journey for little me.
Considering I was like, 9, I find it pretty incredible at the time that I was already expressing my (very complicated) gender identity through such a public thing. Toxin had they/them pronouns, and I was -very- insistent on that.
Also illuminating is how much their character arc centered on being a deeply lonely kid that struggled to be considered their own person. (I think this was the time I was diagnosed with autism, too... )
Who is your current self-insert/persona/fursona? How are they different to your first?
My current sona is Jokes- a cursed puppet that supposedly only feels joy. It's less edgy than my first sona I ever made, but I think it still holds some threads of edginess on account of being a cursed puppet.
I could get into the psychology behind that but it's not as fun to analyze an adult. o_o
What phases/styles has your art gone through? (e.g. Did you have an anime era, a cartoon style, a watercolour phase?)
I used to be really into the art style of Jhonen Vasquez's 90's comics, so a lot of my art as a tween and teenager was big-headed stick figure type characters. I focused a lot on character designs first and everything else second, which led to some struggles with anatomy and perspective that I still curse myself for now.
One aspect that contributed to that problem was that I learned to get -really- fast about sketching my ideas down on paper to refine later. My teachers believed that I was constantly distracted from schoolwork with my compulsive doodling so I'd have to get really fast about putting all my ideas down without anyone seeing- including me.
I've slowly started to transition out of that mindset, but that's a topic visited in a later question.
What/who do you think has influenced your art style the most?
As said before- Jhonen Vasquez. I had a real obsession with cartoon art and how character design contributed to composition, but unfortunately I didn't really get a lot of serious lessons into my head until I was around 19.
When I was making fanventures I used to dig up Andrew Hussie's old blog posts on his art process and study those for stylistic reference. I think that was some of the only art advice that I got from him that didn't turn out to be a load of nonsense, because it was quite literally stuff you could learn from an art class.
What/who inspired you to be an artist?
My sister was really into art when I was little and I wanted to have an activity we could bond over. My grandmother was also a pretty successful watercolor artist and worked as an art teacher for many years, so the few years I got to know her were full of gifted watercolor sets and sketchbooks.
What tools are integral to your current workflow? (e.g. Programs, brushes, references.)
Right now I use Clip Studio Paint. I have a couple brushes I use consistently- there's this Splatoon sponge brush I found a while back on Deviantart that I use for all my lineart. I also use thedawner's oil and charcoal brushpacks for yummy texture- you can find their stuff on Ko-fi. There's also this huge free brushpack I have no memory of downloading and it unfortunately did not come with a readme. It's mostly ink and marker stuff.
As for tablets- I use a Kamvas Pro 16. It's a bit fiddly and the ordering process was a nightmare (I was paranoid I would get a bootleg if I ordered anywhere other than the Huion site) but it's incredibly responsive and well-worth the investment.
I would get in a big rant about how tools don't make the artist, but it really -depends- on what you want to do with your art, and what your needs are.
What improvements have you made recently?
I've been trying to do a lot more varied perspective pieces and utilize volume- I've always struggled with that subject.
I've also been making resolutions to study anatomy better. I have a pretty huge folder in my bookmarks list that leads to various art reference sites.
I've also been watching art tutorial videos by the fistful. Now to put my pen down on the canvas...
What steps would you like to take in the future?
My biggest problem right now is that I have built an anxiety trap around finishing my work as fast as possible. See previously mentioned sketch speedrunning tactics to evade academic punishment. I've taken some steps lately to give myself time to breathe and revisit pieces several times over longer periods before I declare them finished.
And that's it. I personally believe I get a little too glum when I do retrospectives like these, but hopefully you learn something from me rambling.
Feel free to steal this meme from me- I stole it too. You don't have to have someone else's permission to have fun.
every single time i have to make a new account for every new arthost i have such a massive backlog of art that i otherwise posted casually on social media and i have to contemplate which ones are Appropriate to post in my gallery lol. and considering sheezy has a daily upload limit this means i have to worry about forgetting to postttt aughhhhhh (explodes violently)
i guess these first few days im going to post the backlog's greatest hits and then im gonna slink back to my cave where i tear apart other puppets like an insane little dog and come out with something weird and interesting
also this place seems pretty ok and reminiscent of 2009 DA UI (im well aware the original sheezy intentions and was there for some of it) so i think i might stick for nostalgia reasons but if i start seeing people refuse to learn from that era of the internet im gonna start getting out the hammers. i didnt wade through the worst of the slop for nothing
