A bit more detail in this one! I'm really excited about this one, too!
The caps grow from the center out, adding new rings of "leaves" each year. If you count the rings on the underside of the largest cap, you can figure out the minimum age of the tree! If the outer rings of a cap is damaged and removed, the next outermost ring can start to grow new rings again. So, if damaged and regrown, a cap can be older than it appears.
I'm already imagining the ways in which my species, the Lirri, might utilize different parts of this tree! The caps alone have so many possible uses!
More to come soon!
